While changing to 4.56 ratio came to the conclusion that I can't take the pinion mate shaft out. The outerends on both side of the mate shaft are round, all the teeth on the ring are the same hieght.
So besides grinding down 1 teeth, are there any other smart options.
Just grind the end of the tooth down so you can get the cross pin out. Or you can pull the ring gear off and position it so it's in between teeth. I was able to do that on 1 4.56 gear set I ran.
I had to grind a little off of a couple of teeth on my 4.88s.
Alternately, there is a notched cross pin available, but I did some research and determined that grinding a tooth was a common thing and not really detrimental to the gear set.
Ok, i'm convinced, thanks.
I'll start grinding later on.
Never gring the teeth grind the cross shaft to clear the gears. They sell a ground cross shaft just for that problem. I have 4.88s and use the ground cross shaft and had no problems so far and its been to pap at least 12 times.
i just installed 4.88's in my 8.8 too - notched crosspin is bullshit, u still need to grind a tooth edge to get the notched pin to work so i didn't use itOriginally Posted by J B

matt, i call bullshit - maybe you & i have two different style notched crosspins, but the one i got from yukon didn't work! (and it's notched!)Originally Posted by 1 BAD ZJ

Ok, solved took me less then 3 minutes.
Thanks for the input guys
Yeah, the notched cross pin still won't come out after the ring gear is on...that's not why it's notched. Once you have the complete carrier bolted in place, you turn the notched pin so that you can push the axle in far enough to get the c clip on. Then turn the pin 180* and do the other axle. Then the pin is turned 90* from there, so that now the axles but up against the full diameter of the pin.
J B, thanx for clearing that up - i'm running a lockright and used a hardened xpin (no notches or detents at all) - i didn't have a problem installing the c-clipsOriginally Posted by J B
ogdak, exactly what mine looks like - runs fine
you won't have a problem installing the C clips as long as you can get the pin out, but with 4.56s and 4.88s, the ring gear is so thick that the teeth on the gear obstruct the pin.
The teeth obstructing the pin when using low gearsets isn't an uncommon problem by any means, but you only have to deal with it if you have a C clip axle, like the 8.8.
