1997 4.0 ZJ fuel problem?

I have a 1997 ZJ 4.0
While driving, The engine cuts out for less than a second, and comes right back on. This is random, and sometimes the gas gauge drops to empty when this happens. So My question is, Is this a fuel pump going bad? or a short somewhere? any help would be great. Hate to buy a new fuel pump, if it is something else causing this.

Re: 1997 4.0 ZJ fuel problem?

Sounds like an electrical problem. If the gas gauge is going in and out, that means it is either losing power or signal from the sender. Since you are also losing power to the fuel pump intermittently, I'd rule out the gauge wiring as the culprit and start my search at the wires for the pump and sender that go into the tank. I think they come from the area underneath the driver side rear bench seat and pass through a grommet in the floor.

I would almost put money on a loose ground, loose connector, or loose fuse.
