Re: GSSE...WINTER info and registration
Well I had broken more glass wheeling it since our last trip to Harlan and I have continually ran into alot of problems with the horrible departure angle holding me back on alot of trails. So now the tires will be sticking out past the body. I will still be able to put the doors on it when we ride in bad weather and from the front it will still look completely stock.
But I thought I would get that kind of reaction from alot of people.

Looks like a fun project man. You'll love not having to worry about the body. I would recommend dovetailing it behind the C pillar. But either way it will be way more fun than before.

Re: GSSE...WINTER info and registration
X2, its amazing how better you wheel when you don't have to worry about that pesky body.
I got a few uprades myself that should be comming in, so hopefully i'll be able to keep up

Re: GSSE...WINTER info and registration
yea but I had to sell the yj that I was putting the 460 into which sucks. So now i got a motor and no vehicle unless I can figure some way to squeeze that into the zj

Re: GSSE...WINTER info and registration
no, it turns out the 460 he thought he had had shrunk into 351 over the years. Funny thing was he could never figure out why half the parts be purchased didn't fit. This 460 was given to me by one of the guys who work for me.

Haha, that's funny, buying parts for the wrong motor for years.

Re: GSSE...WINTER info and registration
Yup! I will be there but I may not get all the shit done that I want to. I will have my winch installed though.
Where are some pics of JConti's rig lately? I'm curious to see how it turned(s) out.

Hahaha...I'll let him post pics. He's got a long way to go. I saw the first pics of it cut up a few weeks ago. He's started on the cage...but has quite a bit to go. And it will probably change a dozen times, plus fuel cell etc all has to be done. He's been working on it alone so that hasn't helped progress for him at all.

Re: GSSE...WINTER info and registration
New guy here... looking forward to this run. Although compared to most of the group I see attending, it appears I'll be doing a lot of "standing in awe." lol Hope you guys don't mind another IFS xterra tagging along. This is hand's down my favorite park to run and always try to go every chance I get. I'll be staying somewhere in Oak Ridge (probably the Motel 8). Hoping to get up there Thursday night to wheel Friday and Saturday but will probably have to get back Saturday night.
So I see a lot of heavy hitters attending but what about stock to semi-stock rigs? From my last trip; #22

Re: GSSE...WINTER info and registration
Drake, glad to hear you're coming. You may have already seen this thread, but there's a decent number of people bringing rigs with 31s-33s, and an equal number of people on the fence who may also bring similarly built rigs. There will be a few landcruisers, xtrerras, and of course ZJs/WJs running the mild and moderate trails.
I'm happy to hear that several of the people in the non-extreme group(s) have been to windrock and will be able to help show people around. |

Re: GSSE...WINTER info and registration
Excellent. I'm relatively familiar with the southern half of the park but I've always followed when it comes to the trails in the northern half so I don't know them as well. I can't think of the numbers off the top of my head but there are 5 trails that you can make a loop out of in the southwestern corner of the park that's ideal for smaller tire rigs.
One thing I want to mention... even though you will see gas stations selling the park permits, do not buy from them. Only get your park pass at the snack shack. I just found this out back in October. The money made from the permits sold at gas stations is divided up and not all of it goes to Coal Creek/Windrock. Only the money from the permits bought at the shack is 100% returned to the park. |

Re: GSSE...WINTER info and registration
Even if I bring the zuk on 35's I'm probably running with the 31 crowd because I won't have time to test the new configuration out much before the trip. Only way I'm wheeling hardcore is if I bring the buggy, but that requires renting a truck (blah, I'm already broke!)

Re: GSSE...WINTER info and registration
The loop I led a group on back in October was relatively easy to moderate rated and well-suited for those with smaller than 33" tires. I had 3 xterras that were bonestock on 31" A/T's that handled most of them pretty well but there were some really nasty sections of #22 that slowed us down quite a bit but it was more of a traction issue than clearance. I ran it with a shot steering system and didn't further any damage.
Although I'm open-diff/IFS, if there is a group of smaller rigs or those that don't want to get too gnarly, I would be willing to lead them through the same loop one of the days (Friday or Saturday). But I'd like to have at least one rig with a winch in the group either behind me or as a tailgunner. The loop will take about 6 to 7 hours pending no major hang ups.
