hack and tap sye vs hd sye

I'm ready to stop putting of the fact that i need a sye. I am just wondering if anyone is running this hack and tap style and how it is holding up. obviously the HD SYE is going to be stronger with a 32 spline output but is the extra work and money really worth it? Has anyone ran into a problem of the 27 spline giving out? Another question i have is with a cv style drive shaft wont i need my pinion to point at the t-case? If this is true im guessing i wont be able to run my non adj. rears with a sye??? I plan on going with a clatons rear (wish i would have for front as well) in the future but as im sure you all know it sure helps the bank account if i can do my mods one thing at a time. Any advice or input would be much appreciated. brandon

1. Why do you need a sye?
2. Why does it have to be double cardan style?

Re: hack and tap sye vs hd sye

well where should i start with that question other than saying for the same reason's everyone else needs them.

1. Im all ready at 4.5 in of lift and plan on going with more in the future.
2. I have vibs driving at highway speeds
3. I no longer want to run my cross member at a 1in drop as a solution to the above problems.
4. I dont care much for slip yokes.

I am also unaware of a SYE kit for the 242 that does not run a double cardan style drive shaft

I got my 242 SYE kit from Tom Wood. It has the double cardan driveshaft, and it came with a replacement t-case output shaft. Yes, you'll need to have the axle pinion yoke pointed at the t-case output with that style of driveshaft.

Re: hack and tap sye vs hd sye

Are you sure the vibrations are from the rear driveshaft and the pinion angle is correct? You shouldn't need to have the t-case dropped. Many run the same or more lift with a factory type shaft and the t-case in the stock position without a problem. Make sure you know exactly what your problem is before throwing money at it.

You can get different yokes for the t-case other than the 1310 cv most kits automatically come with.

Ken, isn't the Tom Wood's 242 kit just a factory shaft already cut and tapped?

I believe so because I had to send my old one in as a core. So it's a pre-done hack and tap.

Re: hack and tap sye vs hd sye

My main reason for wanting to do a sye is that i want to go with more lift in the future and would rather not have to do a larg list of mods all at once. Figured i would get it out of the way before it became a problem. My T-case is no longer at the 1in drop. When i got my IRO kit it recommended running there cross member at the drop so that's what i did when i installed it but have regretted it ever since i did it. Also IRO's hack and tap is only $200 and that's including a new drive shaft. My pinon angel in the rear is fine but like i said above my rears are non adj. so realy i wont even be able to run this style kit untell i have my rear LA's.

Re: hack and tap sye vs hd sye

I have run my zj at 9" of lift with the stock slip yoke and no t-case drop. If u do the sye you will need a new drive shaft then you will need another drive shaft when u add more lift and adj. arms. Im still running the stock set up and can run 80 down the road no problem.

I think you just have your pinion angle off and can be fixed with adj. arms.

Re: hack and tap sye vs hd sye

well that is good to know. thanks a lot for the input. i guess i can put the money elsewhere then and if it ever does become a problem i will deal with it then. looks like the rear LA's will come sooner than expected
