It seems like there are a lot of threads on ZJ steering upgrades and not so many on WJs. The box on my WJ is leaking pretty bad, worn out, and I need to replace it. Can anyone help me with what my options are? I'd rather upgrade instead of buying a stock reman for 200 bucks.

I was in the same boat...I just picked up a used pump and steering box from an 03 with <50k for $75. I couldn't find any upgrades for the bastard WJ so figured it was good enough. I'd definitely like to know if there are any upgrades available...

well I have never seen a WJ gearbox in person but I just looked up a pic on autozone and the WJ box does not look like the standard style gearboxes the zj's,tj,yj,sj,j10,j20's use...... so I would say it would take some fabbin to get a J20 to work in a WJ

    Good God man.

Maybe I'll find a manual on how to upgrade the WJ box. I'd call PSC or one of the other pump producers, but I know it would end up costing waaaaaaay too much then I am willing to spend.

You could do a J20 box but you have to rebuild the "frame rail". Just get another stocker and save yourself the headache.

You can always drill and tap the stock box too for hydro assist.

Yea I suppose so. I found one for 170 with a warranty, plus it would be easier to tap it out for hydraulic assist while it is out of the jeep. Does anyone know the toughness of the WJ pump? I figured some other WJ guys with bigger than 33" tires would be the people to ask.

the pump isn't any different than others, I used the one from my parts 99 on my 5.9. The resevoirs were diefferent, but the pump itself is identical.

I've run for 2 years now with a tapped stock box and stock pump with 39s. No problems yet.

while doing all of the stuff you talked about you could do this mod to the stock pump as well, i did it with my pump and it made a world of difference to the steering effort, and could be helpfull if your running hydro assist as it makes a stock pump flow better

thought I would put in my 2cents. I was checking into this not to long ago and I went to eastside custom truck here in kirkland washington they got ahold of PSC, and I guess there is 3 different types of pump and box setups, but what I was going to do and prob still will as my rig is always going to see pavement at some time, PSC will make a custom box and pump for my rig-Price is real steap @ $1300 but would be a factory replacement with everything tapped for hydro and would easily be able to crank a 40+" tire with out hydro, they said it would take about a week and a half and they would need my exhisting pump and box to fab the parts, although this is the most expensive route I am not to sure how hydro assist would feel on the road. this is something for the future no need now but I think would be a great upgrade.

But you guys no more than me so please let me know what you think.

Tapping the stock box isn't that difficult. You just need a rebuild kit (seals). Then all you need is a ram, 2 hoses and 4 fittings. I'm into mine for about $150. Street feel is good. My Jeep was my daily driver until about 2 months ago when I got my CTD. I've driven 2 trips from Northern Alberta, Canada to Moab and back with no issues.

If you really want to spend $1300 then find someone that can rebuild the frame rail like in the link I posted above. Then that way you can use an easy to find box and nothing will really be custom for parts. That way when $#!T goes south, parts are easy to come by.

This however is my own opinion, take it for what its worth.

The only thing I may do is either the pump mod or see aboot adapting an aftermarket pump.

Do you have anymore information about tapping the pump for hydro assist? If I have the reman pump out of the vehicle I was going to do the texas mods in the link before, and for the hell of it, I might as well tap it and plug it until I get a ram and decide to go hydro assist. Thanks

You don't have to do anything to the pump.
I'll see if I can dig up my pix of drilling and tapping the steering box sometime later today.

    Its 3am and I can't frickin sleep.
