I have two KC daylighters and I wanna put them on the roof, just with a simple light bar that I could attach to the stock roof rack rails. Anybody have any pictures of how their light bar or roof rack mounts to the stock roof rack rails - as I would like to keep it functional since this is my DD. I was thinking about mounting them onto 2x2 square box, since that's some good scrap metal we have at my school's shop. Any opinions or anything?

I took off my stock roof rails back in the day and drilled two holes centered and mounted the lights and put it back on, cheap, easy and functional. Or as Bigclay said go with kevins, can't go wrong there.

I won Kevin's at GSW a couple years ago - it's definitely stout. My lights are mounted on it, and I've used it as a tie-down. No lie.

    WTF

I was thinking about the KOR light bar, cause it seems to be pretty stout, but I was trying to keep this low/no budget. After powdercoating+shipping, it'd be around $110 or so.

Drilling into the stock roof rack may be an idea, but I'd probably reinforce it somehow, it's pretty flimsy.

I don't think you'd need to reinforce it... you're just mounting a couple of lights on it. When I had mine on it, I placed a foam block from my the kayak rack on my other car beneath the cross bar, and had no issues at all.

Actually it isn't flimsy at all. It just feels that way because it has play at the ends. It's made to slide back and forth along the siderails so it has to be loose not to bind. I have driven 75mph on the freeway and those lights never wiggled.

You should mount it in the trash can.

Using the stock roof rack rails is going to be the easiest way to got, and the cheapest. To be honest, after you have it on for a while you will get sick of it. Mine is coming off soon and I'm waiting to mount 2 lights to my cargo basket.
